The Last Goodbye Act I - Props

The Last Goodbye is a pulp thriller running on the Goldsource engine. In the Gothic metropolis of Prava, the gun-for-hire Lucille - better known on the streets as The Banshee - takes a job from enigmatic entrepreneur Ark McLean. Her target: Bullseye, the deadliest gangster in town. On her travels through the criminal underworld she meets all manner of friends and foes, with plenty of action and intrigue along the way.

Prop design is an art form in itself, and a very efficient way of building up a sense of place and telling a story entirely through visuals. The props of The Last Goodbye were mostly decorative, but some were interactive and required unique animations. Taps would spurt water, drawers could be rifled through, cabinets opened and closed, globes could be spun around and more.

Many props were directly based on real-world objects that I either had in my possession, taken photos of, had photos provided by friends or found photos of online. The fashion mannequins' outfits were taken directly from period magazines. Everything had to feel authentic. Like with everything else, photo materials were used as a basis after unwrapping. Some motifs were repeated across certain props to evoke a feeling of brand continuity by their fictional manufacturers.

The Bird of Prey was an important addition for the sake of reinforcing the pulp adventure feel of the game. It doesn't have any gameplay usage but it establishes The Banshee as a larger-than-life oldschool hero in the vein of James Bond, Batman, The Saint, The Green Hornet and Doctor Who, all of whom had trademark cars (usually full of plot-convenient gadgets).
